2015 Bar Installation, John John's Game Room, Seattle WA

For this project I teamed up with the bartender at this little quirky arcade room to install a new bar. We wanted something unique to set the establishment apart, something so unusual and well crafted that it would hopefully outlast the game-room itself and be sold off once the lease expired.

We chose to lay up strips of 24' poplar, carefully tapered to create the swoosh effect. The widest point in the bar is around 30", where each strip is 5/16" thick, whereas the narrowest end is only 16" wide, where each strip is less than 1/8" thick. Nothing was trimmed from the completed layup—each strip is continuous from end to end. We embedded fine flakes of irridescent sparkles in the finish.

Building was tricky. The space was barely long enough to run the boards through the planer if we shoved one end all the way in the far corner of the oddly shaped triangular building. And once the sections were glued up we had to plane them in the street. We tried bracing the planer in the doorway but we could only manage to plane one side, so we strapped the planer to a telephone pole instead.

This project replaced a rotten and poorly designed stair. By moving the posts around and coordinating the plan and elevation I was able to eliminate one tread from the lower flight, which improved circulation around that corner of the house, the patio to the left and path along the side to the right.

I worked through the winter and pre-painted everything in the garage. Details included ipe treads, a new front door, and a tongue and groove alder ceiling.
